| I live with my Tibetan Mastiff, Shoko, and Bernese Mountain dog,
Francie, in beautiful Cumberland, Maine. (The photo above shows Shoko and Gypsy, who is no longer with me. We miss her terribly.) I worked as a geologist for many years before
becoming a full-time woodworker in 1996. My experience
as an earth scientist has contributed to my new career in many
ways. I have a tremendous respect for the materials that I am
using, always considering the source of lumber and the impact
of logging on the environment. My science background
leads to careful consideration of structural integrity when
designing pieces. And my prior experience with tools and
equipment has allowed me to be less intimidated about learning
to use and maintain woodworking tools and machinery.
Woodworking is a wonderful way for me to (barely) make a
living and I am grateful every day for the engagement and joy
that I feel when doing my job. There is nothing more
satisfying than creating a structurally sound, useful and
beautiful object that will last for years to come.
On a personal note, other activities I enjoy include trail running,
cross-country skiing, mountain biking, and playing with my dogs. |
